What it does not always do is tell the truth about what the evidence actually shows.

This article does not argue that all wellness practices are worthless. Some trendy health habits have genuine scientific support. The goal here is more precise: to equip readers with the critical framework needed to distinguish practices that are evidence-based from those that are primarily marketing.

Why Wellness Claims Are So Convincing

Effective health marketing exploits several well-documented cognitive tendencies. Testimonials feel more persuasive than statistics. Claims framed in the language of science — even when they misrepresent actual science — carry unearned authority. And the concept of "natural" is reliably appealing, despite the fact that naturalness has no bearing on safety or efficacy.

The wellness industry has also benefited from a regulatory environment that allows dietary supplements to be sold in the United States without the same pre-market evidence requirements that apply to pharmaceutical drugs. Under the Dietary Supplement Health and Education Act of 1994, supplement manufacturers are not required to prove their products are effective before selling them. Cold plunging is not dangerous for most healthy individuals, but it carries meaningful risks for people with cardiovascular conditions, and the more ambitious health claims made on its behalf substantially outpace the available science.

Americans who purchase supplements, enroll in wellness programs, or invest in biohacking technology based on unsubstantiated claims are not only potentially wasting money — they may be forgoing evidence-based interventions that would genuinely improve their health.

The fundamentals of health — adequate sleep, regular physical activity, a diet rich in vegetables and whole foods, not smoking, managing chronic stress — remain the most powerfully supported interventions available to most people. They are also, largely, free.
